Joseph and William -- This father and son are both HIV+ and live in Naivasha, Kenya. Joseph, the father, struggles to maintain a living for himself and 12-year-old William. Though they have access to life-saving anti-retroviral drugs, their diet is very poor. When asked what he would like to do to support himself, he suggested raising chickens. With the assistance of a local social worker and members of his church community, he figured how much money would be required to set up this business. It amounted to a mere $1200 for the building, animals, feed and vet care. Writer Ruthann Richter and I raised the funds easily with the help of many concerned friends. Joseph is now in classes to learn the business and I hope to return to Kenya in the next year to check his progress.
