Window of Opportunity -- HIV cuts across all tribal boundaries in sub-Saharan Africa. In rural areas where medical care is often miles away and prohibitively expensive, people do not get treated unless they are seriously ill. People may realize that they have AIDS once they become sick, but be quite unaware they are carrying HIV. G.R.A.C.E. trains midwives in techniques to protect themselves and the baby during all deliveries, as they have no way of determining if the new mother is infected. Some of these techniques are quite simple -- washing blood from the baby after delivery, for example.
